Born in 2001, this Cameroonian-American singer, widely known as Libianca, has taken the music world by storm with her soulful and dynamic Afrobeats sound. Her breakout single, “People” (2022), has catapulted her into the limelight, earning her accolades and a spot among the influential women shaping the continent.
Libianca Fonji entered the world in 2001 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her life took a turn at the age of four when her family faced immigration issues. To evade deportation, her mother made the courageous decision to relocate the family to Bamenda, Cameroon. It was in Bamenda that Fonji’s musical journey began, singing in gospel choirs and honing her skills at a boarding school, where she learned to play the guitar.
Libianca’s journey to musical stardom took a significant leap in 2021 when she participated in the twenty-first season of NBC’s The Voice, coached by none other than Blake Shelton. Although she reached the top 20 before being eliminated, her performances, including covers of “Everything I Wanted” and “Woman,” were released as singles, marking her emergence as a distinctive voice in the industry.
In 2022, Fonji inked deals with 5K Records and Sony, paving the way for her to release the chart-topping Afrobeats single, “People.” The song, inspired by her personal journey with cyclothymia, made waves globally, debuting at No. 2 on the US Billboard Afrobeats chart, claiming the top spot on the UK Afrobeats chart, and reaching No. 2 on the UK Official chart. Her prowess as a performer was further highlighted when she opened for Alicia Keys’ 2023 Keys to the Summer Tour.
Libianca’s musical roots run deep, drawing influence from her Cameroonian upbringing and the rich sounds of Nigerian music and Highlife. Her unique style, described as an “intersection of R&B, Afrobeats, [and] soul,” showcases a blend of genres that reflect the diverse cultural tapestry that has shaped her artistry. Critics and publications, including Complex UK, have lauded her songwriting for its honesty and authenticity.
In the dynamic landscape of the global music scene, Libianca Fonji has emerged as a formidable force, seamlessly blending cultural influences to create a sound that resonates with audiences worldwide. Avance Media proudly acknowledges Libianca’s impactful contributions to the music industry and celebrates her inclusion in the 5th list of 100 Most Influential African Women in 2023.
