Dr. Joyce Aryee is a Ghanaian public figure, known for her vast experience in the public service sector, business, and ministry. Her career began while studying at the University of Ghana when she took up jobs at the West Africa Examination Council in the Test Development and Research Office and Ghana Museums and Monument Board administration. She then served as the Public Relations Officer for the Environmental Protection Council and later the Ghana Standards Board, where she made significant contributions to the organization.
From 1982 to 1985, Dr. Aryee was appointed as the Secretary of Information for the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), a military junta led by former President Jerry John Rawlings. She then went on to hold several ministerial positions, including Minister of Education, Minister of Local Government, and Minister of Democracy in the Office of the Prime Minister, from 1985 to 2001. Additionally, from 1993 to 2001, she served as a Member of the National Defence Council.
Dr. Aryee is also the founder and Executive Director of Salt & Light Ministries, a para-church organization that encourages and motivates the Body of Christ. She is also the founder of the Joyce Aryee Consult, which focuses on the areas of Management and Communications. Dr. Aryee serves as a board member on several boards, including the Kinross Chirano Gold Mine Ghana board, the Mentoring Women Ghana board, and the Roman Ridge School Academic Board. She is also the Chair of Harmonious Chorale, a music group in Ghana.
Dr. Aryee has received several awards and honors, including the Companion of the Order of the Volta in 2006, the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Ghana (CIMG), Marketing Woman of the Year Award for 2007, and the African Leadership on Centre for Economic Development’s African Female Business Leader of the Year Award for 2009. She has also been honored by the Women in Excellence award and the Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards for creating change that paved the way for women. In addition, she is an Honorary Fellow of the Ghana Institution of Engineers and received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Mines and Technology for her immense contributions to the growth of the mining industry.
Furthermore, in honor of her selfless service to the nation and her commitment and contributions to her alma mater, Achimota School named their 17th dormitory ‘Rev Joyce R. Aryee House’ after her.
