Elizabeth Akua Ohene is a highly respected Ghanaian journalist and politician. She served as Minister of State for Tertiary Education under President John Kufuor’s administration in Ghana. Before her appointment to the government, she served as the Editor of the Daily Graphic, the first woman to hold the position.
She attended Mawuli School before gaining admission to the University of Ghana in 1964. In 1967, she graduated with a B.A. (Hon.) degree in English. She also obtained a Mass Communication Certificate from the University of Indiana in Bloomington, USA. Ohene was a Press Fellow at Wolfson College, University of Cambridge, from January to June 1983.
Ohene joined President John Kufuor’s administration as a spokesperson and was appointed Minister of State for Tertiary Education, where she served with distinction.
Ohene’s journalistic work has been recognized with several awards. She is part of the award-winning BBC Focus on Africa team and has also been appointed as the Chairman of the Board of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Overall, Elizabeth Akua Ohene is a trailblazer for women in journalism and politics in Ghana. Her contributions to the field have been recognized both in Ghana and internationally, and she continues to be a respected voice in the country.
